Homeschooling Parents, no musical experience is necessary! Both you and your child will have fun learning the piano or keyboard together.

If your child can recite the alphabet, he or she can learn to play piano or keyboard. For beginners up to about the age of 10, the patterns are presented in simple format through nursery rhymes, poetry, fairy tales, fables, tongue-twisters, and riddles set to folk songs of many lands. The older child can learn from the Adult Beginner Book.

Learning Music Theory Can be Fun!

There is some rudimentary theory in the beginning books such as names of notes, bar lines, bars, treble and bass clefs, which are needed in order to play the songs. Time signatures, counting, fingering, scales, chords, and the like, which are more intellectual, are learned at the unconscious level through the singing and playing of familiar melodies and songs. In its own time, instinct and intellect bond at the conscious level. This method of "learning by doing" is similar to Bach's Method, which is explained below.

What is Pattern Memory?

Pattern Memory is the process whereby the eye absorbs the pattern of notes in the manuscript, quickly translates this information to the brain, then sends it directly to the fingers. Music consists of repeating patterns of single notes and hand formations, which are combined in different ways to produce different sounds. With repetition these patterns are memorized, and then the fingers automatically play the correct keys in the appropriate patterns on the keyboard. This is the same phenomenon that occurs when using a computer keyboard. After a period of time when the typist wants to type the word "the," he or she doesn't think "T... H... E..."  The combination of keys is automatically typed by the fingers without conscious thought.

What is "Bach's Method?"

Bach was a Musical Creator, Not an Imitator!

J.S. Bach, who lived from 1685-1750, had 20 children, 12 of whom he taught to play keyboard - usually the organ. As his children progressed, Bach wrote pieces of music specifically geared to their level of playing to help them learn and master important techniques while playing his beautiful music. These simple pieces are still wonderful learning aids for piano students of all ages. My piano books make use of Bach's method of teaching.
